The Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) recently undertook the modernisation of several access control points across its Solbosch and Plaine campuses in Ixelles, Brussels. As part of this project, three new secure guard booths were designed, manufactured and installed by Metal Quartz to meet today’s requirements in terms of security, functionality and user comfort.
This project perfectly illustrates Metal Quartz’s ability to develop tailor-made solutions for sensitive environments where security must be seamlessly integrated into both the existing architecture and the site’s day-to-day operations.
A Solution Tailored to the Site’s Needs
Each campus presents its own operational challenges. From the earliest stages of the project, close collaboration took place with ULB’s teams to identify the most suitable solutions based on site-specific requirements, traffic flows and security objectives.
The goal was to replace the existing facilities with modern guard booths offering enhanced protection, improved occupant comfort and a visual integration consistent with the university environment.
The new installations include:
- 1 guard booth measuring 2.20 m x 2.20 m x 3.50 m
- 2 guard booths measuring 1.30 m x 2.20 m x 3.50 m
Each unit was custom-developed to meet the specific requirements of its location and the needs of the security personnel operating on site.
Enhanced Protection Through Increased Burglary Resistance
Security was naturally one of the central aspects of the project.
The new guard booths were designed to provide enhanced resistance against intrusion attempts, offering increased protection against unauthorised access and acts of vandalism.
This performance is achieved through a comprehensive design approach that integrates the structural framework, access components and technical equipment into a single security solution.
Each booth is equipped with:
- Secure doors and window frames
- Integrated document transfer tray
- Intercom system
- Reversible air-conditioning system
- Glazing adapted to the site’s requirements
Together, these features create a secure, comfortable and functional working environment for personnel responsible for access control.
A Custom-Built Solution Combining Multiple Materials
To meet the project’s requirements, the guard booths were developed around a robust steel structure combined with aluminium framing systems and custom-made interior fittings.
This combination of materials provides several advantages:
- Excellent mechanical strength
- Long-term durability
- High-quality finish
- A comfortable working environment for users
The interior furniture was also specifically designed for the project to ensure seamless integration with the architecture and functionality of each guard booth.
A Synergy of Expertise Within Icomet Group
The successful completion of this project relied on the collaboration of several complementary areas of expertise within Icomet Group.
Thanks to the close cooperation between teams specialising in steel structures, aluminium systems, interior fit-out and technical installations, it was possible to deliver a fully integrated solution that met ULB’s expectations.
This multidisciplinary approach is one of Icomet Group’s key strengths. It enables efficient coordination of all stakeholders from the design phase through to final installation while ensuring optimal technical consistency and a high standard of workmanship.
An Installation Designed to Minimise Operational Impact
The guard booths were fully assembled and equipped in our workshops before being delivered to the site.
This turnkey approach enabled rapid and efficient installation with minimal on-site intervention.
Once positioned using appropriate lifting equipment, the units could be immediately connected and commissioned. This ensured a fast and secure installation process while minimising disruption to the daily operation of the campus and maintaining smooth access management throughout the works.
Another Reference Project for Metal Quartz
Thanks to this project, ULB now benefits from modern, robust and future-proof access control facilities that are perfectly suited to the demands of a dynamic university environment.
This achievement further confirms Metal Quartz’s expertise in the design and manufacture of custom-built secure guard booths, whether for security checkpoints, access control facilities or other infrastructures where security and burglary resistance are essential requirements.
